Since it’s the beginning of the year I decided its time to clean out my closet! My closet it full of clothes that I know I will never wear or that don’t fit me and I hang on to anyways. I think that’s a girl thing. Anyways instead of giving all my clothes to Goodwill and having nothing left. I decided to try to make my old wardrobe into a new wardrobe.

The first project I started on was removing all my collared shirts that didn’t fit me or that I knew I would never wear. I sorted through them a picked a few that I really loved the collar on. Then I simply cut the collar off, making sure to cut just below the collar and to keep the first button attached. This created some really cute detachable collars! Detachable collars are great for creating a layered look or just adding an accessory to an outfit.

Here’s a few of the DIY detachable collars I created.

This studded rhinestone collar and the denim collar that I added studs to are my favorites!

One of my favorite things about the holidays are the crafts and DIY holiday gifts. This year I made some organic body scrubs that were surprisingly very easy to make. For these scrubs you only need 3 basic things. This first is oil. Coconut oil, grape seed oil and almond oil work really well, but you can always use olive oil if you have to. Then you’ll need a sugar or salt to create an exfoliate. I prefer brown sugar for softer scrub or raw sugar for a course scrub. Using a sea salt is great too. The last thing you will need is scent for the body scrubs. Essential oils are one of the easiest ways to create a scent for your scrub. You can also use things from the kitchen such as fresh squeezed juice, honey, cinnamon or extracts (vanilla, almond etc.) to create a really yummy smelling scrub.

The recipes for all these scrubs are really up to you depending on how thick  and how fragrant you would like you scrub. I generally do about 3/4 part sugar or salt and 1/4 part oil before adding my scent.

This year I made two different scrubs. One was a lavender scrub made from raw sugar, coconut oil and lavender essential oil. The other was a scent I called “Gingerbread cookie”. For this scrub I used brown sugar, coconut oil, cinnamon, honey and ginger. It was a perfect scent for the holidays!

For my DIY Body Scrubs I prefer to clean an old jar. This makes its a really unique green gift that you can get creative with and customize! Its fun to put a small piece of fabric over the lid and tie a ribbon around it.

Let me know what you come up with!

DIY Peter Pan Collars Part 2

November 17, 2012

After falling so in love with my first removable DIY Peter Pan collar, I couldn’t stop with just one . I ended up making 2 more with things I had around the house and bought a ton of supplies to make even more today. I’m really excited about how they all turned out!

My gold and sparkly collar can be found in my previous post. The pink collar was just made with some fabric that I painted a little mod podge on to make it a little sturdier and a cool gold and white vintage button I had. For the sequined collar I used black felt and glued sequins off over it. Then I sprayed it with a glitter sealer to help hold them on. Hope you like them! =)

I found a video by missglamorazzi where she shows how she makes her DIY Peter Pan collar necklaces and shared the pattern she used which you can download here. She gives some great ideas for different styles of collars some helpful hints.

DIY Peter Pan Collar

November 16, 2012

Who doesn’t love the adorable Peter Pan collared shirts that are in right now? I think they are super fun and fashionable, but lets face it I can’t afford a whole new wardrobe full of Peter Pan collars. Which is why I was really excited to see the removable collars come out. I love this idea because you can turn a simple sweater, t shirt or dress shirt into a totally different look. I went on a search recently for some good ideas in creating my own DIY Peter Pan Collar. I came across this one on Honestly WTF site and I really loved the scalloped edges. I decided to use her cut out for my collar which can be found here.

Although  loved her look, I really wanted a glittery fun collar. I came across some gold glitter foam for 97 cents at Walmart which was located in the craft section with the pieces of felt. I decided it would be perfect for my first detachable collar because it’s easy to cut and easy to poke holes in. Since its glittered up its very hard to tell that its foam and not some other material.

First, I cut out the scalloped pieces using the link above. Then, I used a thick needle ( a yarn needle would work best) to poke holes in the end. I pushed thick black ribbon through each side to be able to tie it together. Finally to connect the two pieces I hot glued a really fun black button in the middle of them.

When you finish you tie it on and that’s it you have a removable scalloped DIY Peter Pan Collar.

I think its really cute and I’m excited to experiment with some different materials so check back soon.

DIY Refashioned Men’s Tie

November 7, 2012

Every time I go to Goodwill I find TONS of men’s ties with really cool prints! Recently I found a paisley print I couldn’t resist…so I bought it and decided to refashion it. This took me about 2 minutes and I recieved tons of compliments! I cut about 10 inches off the skinny side of the tie so I could make it shorter. After than I just frayed some of the edges especially around the bottom and pulled out some of the filling. This made the tie look more worn in and fashionable.

Here’s m refashioned men’s tie

I really love how it turned out, but wish you could see the frayed edged more and the bottom of the tie. I think you get the idea though. After I finished this project I started to search for new ways to create a refashioned men’s tie and found this video. Be prepared Bunny is a bit crazy, but I think that’s sort of why I love her. Anyways I plan on making some scarves and necklaces out of an old tie in the near future.

My friends made me a day of the dead girl for Halloween. I thought it turned out pretty awesome!

My lips were slightly lop sided and we didn’t do any detail on the chin or nose, but all and all I thought it turned out awesome.  My Day of the Dead make up cost 5 bucks and we put the look together in about 20 minutes.

I wore all black and my combat boots and had a great night out with friends!

^ This pic was the final look. We filled the flower petals in with pink eyeshadow and threw some glitter over top of it.

After recently purchasing my first Hi Fructose Magazine, I felt incredibly inspired. If you’ve never heard of Hi Fructose you should check them out. This magazine is filled with art and interviews by some amazing artists.

Okay so back to feeling inspired…

I had an old window I have been wanting to do something with for a while so I decided to make a fun collage with prints from the magazine. First I painted the window a blue grey color then I added all sorts of art in each frame. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out and even better it sits on the back of my art desk to help me stay inspired all the time!

Here it is…my fun and inspiring upcycled window collage

I wanted something at my art desk to help keep me get organized so I made this DIY Calender from Post Its. Its pretty awesome because you can use whatever colors you want and make it fit to you.  I used green and blue because they were the ones I had on hand, but I think it’d be really neat to do the colors based on the Holiday or season. For instance green and red for December or Blue and Red for July. You could even make it look like a flag in July! Either way I think this a fun way to get organized.

Here’s my calender

Recyclebank

October 24, 2012

I started visiting this website called Recyclebank.

It’s a website that teaches you about recycling and how you can help make a difference in the world by being greener. While learning these things and making pledges to do things in a way that’s more environmental friendly you earn points! The points can be used for coupons, free things, even gift cards if you rack up enough. It doesn’t take much time at all to watch the videos or read the information and some of it is really useful. Anyways the main reason I’m bringing this up is I recently realized there were magazine subscriptions on there! I scored 4 free magazines! I was given  a year subscription to Martha Stewart Living, Whole Living, Harper’s BAZAAR  and Marie Claire for free! I’m working on getting enough points to also get the Marta Stewart Wedding magazine because I think a lot of it would help inspire me to do some new crafts. I’m really excited about this because they will be useful for inspiration and who doesn’t like free stuff?! Plus I always love having magazines on hand for fun crafts. There were many more magazines to choose from these just happen to be the ones that I had enough or with my points.
